Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and tucked quietly in the hills of Orinda, California, the Buehler Estate is one of those rare places that manages to feel simultaneously architectural, overwhelmingly green, and deeply human. When I visited the estate for the first time, its beauty moved me to tears. Though the property was completed in 1948, it still carries a sense of freshness and futurism that feels suspended in time. For couples in the Bay Area who care about mid-century modern design, it is the perfect place to get married.
What is the Buehler Estate?
The Buehler Estate is a Usonian home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Maynard and Katharine Buehler. Wright shaped the residence around long horizontal lines, low rooflines, and a restrained palette of redwood and concrete block, creating spaces that gently balance the interior with the surrounding gardens. His philosophy was rooted in the idea that good architecture should be private, approachable, and deeply connected to nature. When Wright returned after the home was completed, Katharine later recalled him saying, “I am glad to see you are living graciously in my house.”
Let's dive into what makes a Buehler Estate wedding so special, and how to begin planning one of your own.

Why Get Married at the Buehler Estate?
1. You’re getting married inside a genuine Frank Lloyd Wright home.
This is not a "Frank Lloyd Wright–inspired” venue. It is a genuine Usonian residence, one of only 60 ever made, meaning every proportion, window, and pathway was intentionally designed for real people to live in. The home is filled with custom furniture and personal details. Your wedding will take place inside a genuine architectural landmark (literally; the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006).
The home is still filled with custom details and built-in furniture created specifically for the space. The house's primary hallway opens into a living room defined by a dramatic slanted ceiling finished in 24-karat gold, wraparound seating, and walls of glass. The adjacent dining room continues that same openness, visible from the living space and surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a feeling of constant connection to the gardens beyond.
2. Though the estate feels tucked away and private, it's still conveniently located.
Hidden in the quiet Orinda hills, the property feels secluded without being remote. There’s no highway noise, no neighboring venues, no visual clutter. However, Orinda is still within close driving distance of the San Francisco and Oakland airports, allowing out-of-town guests to the Your wedding will feel like an elevated backyard garden party, except it's taking place at the coolest house in the world.
3. The architecture feels modern and timeless at the same time.
Although the Buehler Estate was built in 1948, it somehow feels fresh and modern in a way that few contemporary buildings seem to. The structure, which is heavy on long lines and sharp corners, contrast wonderfully with the soft, lush backyard. Wedding florals similarly balance the house, adding dimension and warmth to the atmosphere in and around the house.
The house has its own vibe and branding, with repeating motifs including a signature logo, which can be found repeated throughout the hallway windows, fence, and exterior. It all gives the space a sense of continuity that’s hard to manufacture and easy to feel.

4. The gardens were designed by Henry Matsutani, the mastermind behind Golden Gate Park's Japanese Tea Garden.
The gardens offer a beautiful, flexible setting for both your ceremony and reception. Vows can be exchanged facing the house itself or oriented toward the rest of the landscape, depending on the feeling you want for your wedding. With Orinda’s mild, temperate climate throughout much of the year, planning an outdoor wedding here feels far less weather-dependent.
The gardens have always been central to the vision of the Buehler Estate. When the project was first discussed, Frank Lloyd Wright insisted that the landscape be designed by Henry Matsutani before he would move forward with the house itself. Matsutani ultimately shaped the estate’s four acres into a Japanese-inspired garden that feels layered complete with waterfalls, arched bridges, and a traditional tea house tucked quietly into the greenery.
In true Usonian fashion, the rear of the home opens fully to this landscape through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, softening the line between interior and exterior until it almost disappears. On a wedding day, guests naturally flow between the house and the gardens, never feeling confined to one space. The gardens provide a soft, organic counterpoint to the drama of the architecture, bringing a sense of calm to the entire experience.
5. You and your guests will remember the Buehler Estate long after the wedding day.
Good design tends to leave an impression that’s hard to put into words. There’s something about the way the house and gardens are laid out that people feel more than notice. It’s a place that leaves a lasting imprint. After the wedding is over, the estate doesn’t blur into a vague memory of tables and flowers. Guests remember walking through the house, pausing by the waterfall, sitting on the furniture, and feeling present in the space. For couples, it’s a fitting place for a wedding; the timeless design is a metaphor for your forever.

How to Book the Buehler Estate for Your Wedding
Getting married at the Buehler Estate begins with a direct inquiry to the venue to confirm availability and guest capacity. Because it is a privately owned Frank Lloyd Wright home rather than a commercial event site, the estate hosts a limited number of weddings each year and is selective about how the property is used. Once your date is confirmed, you’ll receive detailed guidelines covering event flow, rentals, catering, and vendor coordination — all designed to protect the architecture and gardens while still allowing your day to feel personal and fluid.
