If you're planning a proposal on the Northern California coast, consider popping the question at the Sea Ranch Lodge: it's secluded, has gorgeous mid-century modern architecture, and is close enough to San Francisco (about 2.5 hours) so it's perfect for a romantic weekend trip. Here’s everything you need to know about planning your proposal at this iconic property.

1. Understand the Venue Locations
The Lodge is located in Sea Ranch, a community spanning ten scenic miles along California’s Sonoma Coast. Sea Ranch emphasizes sustainability, seamlessly blending with its natural surroundings while prioritizing minimal environmental impact and "living lightly on the land." Originally constructed in the 1960s and fully renovated in 2020, the Lodge now includes 17 modern guest rooms, all of which have been intentionally designed to blend in with the original mid-century modern structure and organic environment. It's the perfect getaway for couples who love modern design and feel at peace near the ocean.
Here are some suggestions for proposal spots, all within a short walking distance of the Lodge.
Recommended Areas to Propose
- Bihler Point: The bluff right off the main trail from the Lodge. Bihler Point is easily accessible by foot and is closer to the Lodge than appears on the map. This would be my top recommendation for those looking to get engaged with rugged coastal views, as there are many places along the Flower Train to Bihler Point that can be perfect for a proposal. Pro tip: For some reason on Google Maps, Bihler Point is mislabeled as Black Point (another bluff to the North of Bihler). Consult the Lodge map below for accurate information.
- Barn Meadow North: A small meadow to the north of the historic Black Point Barn that allows couples to wed framed against the Pacific Ocean. This area is slightly shielded from the wind from the Barn and a bit more private.
- Meadow Courtyard: More private courtyard to the side of Room 17 offers views of the Meadow and a smaller portal.
The Sea Ranch Lodge property is easy to explore on foot, which makes it simple to wander the area and get a feel for the different spaces. Your proposal photographer may also know the area well and be able to provide custom recommendations based on what you are envisioning.

2. Make Your Guest Room Reservation at the Sea Ranch Lodge
Once you have a sense of your proposal plans, reserve your room at the Sea Ranch Lodge. The Lodge offers a variety of accommodations, from comfortable standard rooms to more private suites, some featuring fireplaces, private lofts, and upstairs views. Explore Lodge room options here.
3. Timing the Proposal
Timing matters for two reasons: light and logistics. From a photography standpoint, an hour before sunset is ideal. The Lodge faces directly west towards the Pacific, so you get a beautiful, dramatic sunset over the ocean. Consider where a proposal fits most naturally in your itinerary. If it aligns with your schedule, proposing around golden hour can set you up to move straight into a celebratory dinner after (which leads us to Step 4!).

4. Make a Dinner Reservation at the Dining Room
There is no better way to celebrate your engagement than with a delicious meal in a beautiful place. Consider making a dinner reservation at the Dining Room, the Sea Ranch Lodge's in-house restaurant. The Dining Room's culinary philosophy is rooted in “rustically refined cuisine, beautifully presented to reflect [their] commitment to living lightly on the land.” Ingredients are thoughtfully sourced, with many harvested directly from the in-house Sea Ranch farm or carefully selected from local farmers and producers, ensuring fresh, seasonal, and high-quality dishes. Be sure to make a reservation beforehand, as the Dining Room can get booked out in advance.
5. Hire Your Proposal Photographer
A photographer familiar with Sea Ranch can help you choose the right spot, time the light, and work through logistics in advance. After the proposal itself, set aside a little time for portraits of the two of you. We can commemorate this moment with some fun photos of you two around the beautiful property.
