Steps to Elope at the Sea Ranch Lodge
1. Secure Your Date
The first step to planning your Sea Ranch elopement is to contact the Lodge and check availability. The Lodge books out quickly, so if you are set on a specific date, it is recommended to reach out early, with more flexibility given to weekday elopement dates.
2. Understand the Venue Options
The Sea Ranch Lodge offers a variety of indoor and outdoor event spaces to fit your elopement.
Ceremony areas:
- Barn Meadow North: A small meadow to the right of the historic Black Point Barn that allows couples to wed framed against the Pacific Ocean. This area is recommended for ceremonies as it is slightly shielded from the wind and has space for all ceremony sizes.
- Barn Meadow South: The meadow to the left of the Black Point Barn that allows couples to wed framed against the Pacific Ocean with no fencing obstructing the view of the ocean.
- Bihler Point: Some smaller weddings opt to exchange vows on the bluff directly behind the Lodge.
- Ocean Deck: Newly renovated, the Ocean Deck is just outside the Portal and provides a more accessible and architectural and less grassy location for your ceremony.
Reception and cocktail hour areas (available to add-on):
- Ocean Meadow: Outdoor grassy space overlooking the ocean, just in front of the Lodge. Some weddings set up one long dinner table, joining all guests together for an unforgettable meal.
- The Solarium: Indoor space with sweeping ocean views from the large windows, perfect for smaller dinner parties.
- The Dining Room: Formal dining space with larger capacity. Outside of events, the Dining Room hosts restaurant guests here for dinner.
- The Ocean Deck: A blend of outdoor charm overlooking the Ocean Meadow, allowing guests to enjoy cocktails with panoramic ocean scenery on the main deck.
As part of your elopement package, the Lodge will set up and furnish your ceremony space with tables, chairs, and spa water. Working with the experienced Sea Ranch Lodge events team will help you figure out which spaces fit your vision best.

3. Plan Your Guest List and Accommodations
Elopements at the Sea Ranch Lodge are designed for intimate gatherings of two to twenty guests. Your elopement package includes a guest room for at least one night, though I'd recommend staying two to four nights so you have time to really settle in and enjoy Sea Ranch. If you're bringing guests along, they can stay with you on property at the Lodge or nearby in Sea Ranch, Gualala, or Jenner, where you'll find plenty of hotels and vacation rentals. The Sea Ranch Lodge also offers a handful of striking Sea Ranch homes for rent, which is a lovely way for everyone to stay together and soak in that signature blend of wild coastline and thoughtful architecture the whole week long.
4. Getting There
The drive to Sea Ranch is beautiful but very long and winding. There's no major airport nearby, so most guests will fly into San Francisco or Santa Rosa and drive the rest of the way. Because the Sea Ranch is intentionally remote, services are limited once you arrive, so it's worth bringing your wedding essentials in rather than anticipating purchasing wedding-specific items while there. It's also a good idea to download directions ahead of time, since cell service can be spotty throughout the area.
To make the drive up from San Francisco more enjoyable, plan a few stops along the way. Here are a few personal recommendations, in distance order starting from SF up to Sea Ranch.
Road Trip Recommendations
- Croissant at Arsicault in San Francisco
- Pastries at Stellina Pronto in Petaluma
- Cheesecake, kefir, and soft serve at Valley Ford Creamery in Valley Ford
- Clam chowder at the Boat House in Bodega Bay
- Gas in Jenner "C" Store. This is the last gas station until you get up to Gualala (north of Sea Ranch). This is your last chance to fill up before you reach the Lodge (29 miles and 1 hour away from Jenner).
5. Prepare for the Weather
The Sea Ranch is known for its cool coastal climate, and even in summer you can expect fog and a good bit of wind rolling in off the ocean. If you're hosting guests, it's worth having blankets considering wedding attire that can stand up to the coast. If you're wearing a veil, be sure to pin it well; your HMUA will be able to help you with this.
Fortunately, the Sea Ranch is striking in both full sun and moody fog, so the setting will serve you beautifully either way. As many photographers will attest, a slightly overcast sky often provides the most flattering light of all.
6. Plan Your Wedding-Day Schedule (Sample Timeline)
One of the best parts of eloping is that the day is entirely yours; there's no rigid timeline to march through. That said, it helps to have a loose shape in mind, especially out here where the light and the coast do so much of the work. Here's an example timeline for an elopement day at the Sea Ranch Lodge:
- Morning — Relaxing start. Ease into the day with a quiet breakfast or a walk along the bluffs together. The Lodge offers a few breakfast options on-site or visit Gualala for additional restaurant options.
- Early afternoon — Getting ready. Plan for hair and makeup to wrap a couple of hours before the ceremony. This is a lovely, relaxed moment to photograph; the details and anticipation are such a wonderful start to your wedding day story.
- Afternoon — Ceremony. !!!
- Cocktail hour (optional). Toast with a drink and a few small bites on the Ocean Deck as the afternoon settles into evening.
- Evening — Dinner and celebration. Close the night with a meal at the Dining Room just the two of you, or reserve the Solarium or the Chef's Table for a private dinner with your closest loved ones.
- Golden hour portraits (optional). Sunset at Sea Ranch can be gorgeous. The Lodge faces directly west, so you can see the sun dipping over the horizon over the Pacific Ocean in the evening. It's a great time for the two of you to relax together and get a few more portraits on the bluffs while the light is golden and ocean sparkles.

Final Tips for a Seamless Sea Ranch Elopement
- Book early. The Lodge fills quickly, so reach out as soon as you have a date in mind. Weekdays tend to offer more flexibility.
- Plan your travel ahead. It's about a three-hour drive from San Francisco, so aim to arrive before sunset and stock up on gas, groceries, and essentials before you reach the coast.
- Download directions in advance. Cell service is spotty throughout the Sea Ranch, so save your maps offline and share the day-of plan with guests beforehand.
- Enjoy Sea Ranch. The beauty of eloping in Sea Ranch is that it's a space to slow down and enjoy a remote section of the California coast. Enjoy the coastal breeze, the sun (and fog) on your face, and the opportunity to wed in heaven on earth.
