The Sea Ranch Lodge as a Wedding Venue

The Lodge is located in Sea Ranch, a thoughtfully-designed community spanning ten scenic miles along California’s Sonoma Coast. Sea Ranch emphasizes sustainability, seamlessly blending with its natural surroundings while prioritizing minimal environmental impact and "living lightly on the land." Originally constructed in the 1960s and fully renovated in 2020, the Lodge now includes 17 modern guest rooms, all of which have been intentionally designed to blend in with the original mid-century modern structure and organic environment.

Sea Ranch has a certain distinct feel that sets it apart from anywhere else. I would highly recommend visiting before booking if possible, as you will be able to get a sense for the property and the feel of the area. Its remoteness is notable but also part of the big appeal, as it feels like an otherworldy destination while still being drivable.

The Sea Ranch Lodge offers a variety of indoor and outdoor event spaces to fit your wedding style.

Ceremony areas

  • Barn Meadow North: A small meadow to the right of the historic Black Point Barn that allows couples to wed framed against the Pacific Ocean. This area is recommended for ceremonies as it is slightly shielded from the wind and has space for all ceremony sizes. Capacity: 200 guests
  • Barn Meadow South: The meadow to the left of the Black Point Barn that allows couples to wed framed against the Pacific Ocean with no fencing obstructing the view of the ocean. Capacity: 200 guests
  • Ocean Deck: For an additional fee, you may rent the Ocean Deck just outside the Portal for your elopement ceremony
  • Bihler Point: Some smaller weddings opt to exchange vows on the bluff

Reception and cocktail hour areas

  • Ocean Meadow: Outdoor grassy space overlooking the ocean, just in front of the Lodge. Some weddings set up one long dramatic dinner table, joining all guests together for an unforgettable meal.
  • The Courtyard: Interior outdoor space facing the Lodge rooms. Perfect for welcome events or cocktail hour.
  • The Solarium: Indoor space with sweeping ocean views from the large windows, perfect for smaller dinner parties with 35 guests or fewer.
  • The Dining Room: Formal dining space with larger capacity. Outside of events, the Dining Room hosts restaurant guests here for dinner.
  • The Fireside Lounge: Cozy area with a retro fireplace and decor. Perfect for dance parties or lounging with your guests.
  • The Ocean Deck: A blend of outdoor charm overlooking the Ocean Meadow, allowing guests to enjoy cocktails with panoramic ocean scenery on the main deck.
  • The Meadow: This large outdoor space is best for tented structures and custom reception patios.

Working with your wedding planner and the experienced Sea Ranch Lodge events team will help you figure out which spaces fit your vision best.

Guest List and Accommodation Information

The venue can accommodate both small and large weddings, but for events exceeding 50 guests, a buyout of all 17 rooms is required. This ensures privacy for your celebration and exclusive use of the Lodge’s amenities. Guests can stay on property in one of the guest rooms or at nearby vacation rentals in Sea Ranch, Jenner, or Gualala.

If you are doing a full buyout, you have a few additional options, including a custom glamping setup in the Meadow to allow for additional guests to stay onsite.

Considering guest travel and accommodations is especially important at the Sea Ranch Lodge. The drive to Sea Ranch is beautiful but very long and winding. There's no major airport nearby, so most guests will fly into San Francisco or Santa Rosa and drive the rest of the way. Because the Sea Ranch is intentionally remote, services are limited once you arrive, so it's worth bringing your wedding essentials in rather than anticipating purchasing wedding-specific items while there. It's also a good idea for you and your guests to download directions ahead of time, since cell service can be spotty throughout the area.

To make the drive up from San Francisco more enjoyable, plan a few stops along the way. Here are a few personal recommendations, in distance order starting from SF up to Sea Ranch.

Road Trip Recommendations
  • Croissant at Arsicault in San Francisco
  • Pastries at Stellina Pronto in Petaluma
  • Cheesecake, kefir, and soft serve at Valley Ford Creamery in Valley Ford
  • Clam chowder at the Boat House in Bodega Bay
  • Gas in Jenner "C" Store. This is the last gas station until you get up to Gualala (north of Sea Ranch). This is your last chance to fill up before you reach the Lodge (29 miles and 1 hour away from Jenner).

Securing Your Date

The first step to planning your Sea Ranch wedding is to contact the Lodge and check availability. Due to popularity, booking well in advance is recommended, particularly for weekend weddings and partial/full buyouts.

Selecting Your Dinner Menu and Bar Package

The Sea Ranch Lodge provides in-house catering for every wedding. Sample menus from the Dining Room are available to view on the Lodge's website, with more detailed information about dinner and bar packages available upon submitting your wedding inquiry.

The Lodge’s culinary philosophy is rooted in “rustically refined cuisine, beautifully presented to reflect [their] commitment to living lightly on the land.” Ingredients are thoughtfully sourced, with many harvested directly from the in-house Sea Ranch farm or carefully selected from local farmers and producers, ensuring fresh, seasonal, and high-quality dishes.

The Sea Ranch Lodge offers full + partial buyout couples a complimentary tasting experience for up to four guests. Additional guests are welcome to join the tasting at a special reduced rate. This personalized approach ensures your wedding menu reflects your unique tastes and expectations. Elopement and micro celebration couples can sample offerings through a reservation at the Dining Room.

One of the additional benefits of hosting your wedding at the Sea Ranch Lodge is that they will provide ceremony and reception chairs, tables, china, flatware, and glassware.

Hiring Your Wedding Planner

A full-service planner and/or day-of coordinator may be required depending on the scale of your Sea Ranch Lodge wedding. In addition to your wedding planner, the experienced Sea Ranch event service managers are here for you throughout the pre-planning process and all on-site details. Hiring a professional wedding planner is one of the best investments you can make toward a seamless and stress-free wedding day. With their expertise in event coordination, vendor management, and budgeting, a planner helps bring your vision to life while handling all the intricate details behind the scenes.

This is especially valuable for the bigger-picture logistics that come with a larger wedding at a remote property. If your guest count calls for a custom tent or structure on the Meadow, your planner will help you coordinate the design, source the right rental company, and manage the timeline and budget that come with building out a space from the ground up. They'll also help you navigate guest transportation, which includes arranging shuttles, mapping pickup and drop-off schedules across the Lodge and nearby rentals, and making sure everyone travels safely along the coast, especially after dark.

Final Tips for Your Sea Ranch Lodge Wedding

  1. Start with your guest count and your vision. This will determine your reservation type, the spaces available to you, and whether you'll need a buyout.
  2. Book well in advance. The Lodge is popular and dates go quickly, especially weekends and buyouts. Reserving early also gives you the best chance at your preferred vendors, most of whom travel in and book up ahead.
  3. Make it a weekend. Your guests are traveling to be here, so build in welcome events, group meals, and time to explore. Sea Ranch is so beautiful and remote, it's the perfect opportunity to bond with your loved ones in a special place.
